Fracture behaviour of foam core sandwich structures with manufacturing defects using phase-field modelling

چکیده

This study investigates fracture behaviour of sandwich structures with foam core slits. These slits are typically machined in the materials to improve manufacturability but inevitably lead material discontinuities such as resin-starving regions or voids. Using phase-field method, which does not require exact location crack initiation path known a prior, complex process different resin-filling is numerically reproduced. We examine effective stiffness, peak force, displacement at initiation, and dissipated energy during structure under shear loads following ASTMC273 test standard. It found that fully partly resin filled exhibits better resistance than ones intact unfilled The also shows good ductility due presence effects number slits, slit spacing density on load-carrying capacity examined, providing insights into damage tolerance manufacturing defects.

Effects of Ply Stacking Sequence in 3D Fiber Reinforced Foam Core Sandwich Structures with Defects

Foam core sandwich composites are widely used in primary structural components of launch vehicles and spacecraft. These structures exhibit complex failure modes and are highly sensitive to butt-joints, core mismatches, impact damage, voids, and facesheet delaminations. 3D Fiber Reinforced Foam Cores (3DFRFC) represent a new class of core material designed to replace standard foam core in future...

Determining Effective Interface Fracture Properties of 3D Fiber Reinforced Foam Core Sandwich Structures

Foam core sandwich composites are finding a wider breadth of use in aerospace, automotive, and construction applications. These structures present unique challenges in terms of material failure and interaction and are highly sensitive to damage and imperfections introduced during manufacturing. An emerging class of 3D Fiber Reinforced Foam Core (3DFRFC) aims to replace monolithic foams used in ...

Local Buckling of Web-Core and Foam-Core Sandwich Panels

Sandwich construction is widely accepted as a method of construction especially in the aircraft industry. It is a type of stressed skin construction formed by bonding two thin faces to a thick core, the faces resist all of the applied edge loads and provide all or nearly all of the required rigidities, the core spaces the faces to increase cross section moment of inertia about common neutral ax...

modelling of the indentation behaviour of thermoplastic honeycomb sandwich panels

thermoplastic honeycombs based on polypropylene are one of the latest types of cores used in sandwich structures. up to now there have been few experimental and modelling studies on the mechanical behaviour of sandwich structures with thermoplastic cores. in this paper, by considering the similar properties of foams and thermoplastic honeycombs, attempts are made to model the static indentation...

Dynamic fracture behavior of model sandwich structures with functionally graded core: a feasibility study

Feasibility of introducing compositional gradients to the core of a sandwich structure and the resulting fracture behavior under impact loading conditions is the primary focus of the study. Model sandwich structures comprising of graded core with bilinear variation of volume fraction of hollow microballoons are considered for experimental and numerical simulations. Conventional sandwiches with ...
